The Carmenère from San Leonardo is surely the oldest grape variety cultivated on the estate. It was introduced thanks to Oddone de Gresti’s passion for international varieties, who planted it at the end of the 19th century. For years, it was mistaken for Cabernet Franc, until Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, in the late 1980s, planted new Cabernet Franc vines for comparison and realized he had this particular, nearly forgotten variety. Following years of extensive experimentation, it became “the essence of San Leonardo”. Carmenère gives personality to all red wines produced on the estate.
