    An Epic Cycling Adventure!

    2016-11-11 15:58:09

Kate Morgan, a key member of our South Wales team is abandoning the Welsh hills on an epic adventure. With a very personal cause at heart, Kate is joining 33 other passionate individuals to cycle 400km through Vietnam and Cambodia. Ranging from 23 to 73, the group expect to cover approximately 50 miles a day for 9 days, all in aid of the Paul Sartori Foundation Hospice Care.

The Paul Sartori Foundation is a Hospice at Home Service, offering unusually high levels of support and a range of services to people living with life-limiting illness. Each member of the group has been touched by the foundation’s work in some way. Kate describes her experience,

“In November 2014 I learned I had cancer, but 2 operations and a good toasting of radiotherapy, along with wonderful care, I am now clear. I know I was very lucky, and many of us have been touched by the wonderful work of Paul Satori looking after friends and family. Raising funds to support this amazing organisation is my way of celebrating my recovery”.

Not only does this challenge celebrate her recovery, but it also acts as a show of hope for others suffering from the dreaded ‘c’ word. We are extremely proud of Kate here at Blas ar Fwyd and wish her all the best in her challenge. With long days ahead of them, many rolling hills and hot, humid conditions we know it won’t be easy.

If you would like to support Kate in reaching her goal of £5,000; a large chunk of the collective £70,000 goal, please do so through the following link.

    Speciality & Fine Food Fair

    2016-11-04 14:02:26

Speciality & Fine Food Fair was a fantastic event with a brilliant turnout for Welsh Food, as described in Welsh Country Magazine's article...

It was fantastic to witness such a strong Welsh presence at Speciality Fine Food Fair in London earlier this month. Speciality has been described as the UK’s leading showcase of fine food and drink. As part of the Welsh showcase stand, Blas ar Fwyd, from Llanrwst featured a broad range of award winning products that have acheived 35 Great Taste Awards since they first entered in 2004. Great Taste is the world’s most coveted blind-tasting food awards, providing a trusted benchmark accreditation for artisan and speciality food producers. This year the Apple and Apricot Chutney, Cranberry Sauce, and Lemon, Raspberry and Strawberry cheesecakes all received Great Taste Awards. The cheesecakes continued to steal the show at Speciality, as both tasting pots and samples flew off the stand to an overwhelmingly positive reaction.

As well as a producer, Blas ar Fwyd are also a distributor of Welsh food and drink and many of their partner companies were exhibiting at the fair, including Llaeth y Llan, Coconut Kitchen, Welsh Lady Preserves, Selwyn’s Seaweed and Apple County Cider to name a few. Apple County Cider had a spectacular show, receiving their second prestigious and much coveted Golden Fork award. Only 14 Golden Fork awards are presented each year with one award being given for the best food or drink product in each region. Apple County’s Dabinett cider won this year following their Vilberie Cider’s Golden Fork award in 2015, showcasing Apple County as a force to be reckoned with in the cider world!

With over 37 countries being represented at Speciality Fine Food Fair, the multi-award winning producers on the Welsh showcase stand distinguished Wales as an up and coming nation for fine food and drink. The attention received from buyers, members of press, wholesalers and producers made it a truly enjoyable, positive and encouraging experience for Welsh food representatives.

Great Taste 2016 - Award Winners

    2016-11-04 12:05:06

Blas ar Fwyd have continued their Great Taste success at the 2016 awards, receiving the Gold 1-star award for five products and bringing their Great Taste total awards to thirty five. Great Taste is the world’s most coveted blind-tasting food awards, providing a trusted benchmark accreditation for artisan and speciality food producers.

In this diligent judging process taste is valued above all other aspects as each product is removed from its external wrapping to be judged by 500 palates ranging from chefs, to restauranteurs, critics, cooks, producers, writers and journalists. This years judges included TV chef and author Valentine Warner, MasterChef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Campion, fifth generation baker, Tom Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery, Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn and food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and Waitrose chefs.

Out of the 10,000 products to be judged, Blas ar Fwyd received awards for their Raspberry, Lemon and Strawberry Cheesecakes, Apple & Apricot Chutney and Nant Conwy Cranberry Sauce.

Judges complimented the taste, texture and quality of the produce “The cheesecake is soft, light and creamy, the biscuit base is lovely and crunchy and crumbly and has retained its integrity”, in addition to the balance of ingredients, describing the chutney as “A pleasing looking product with plump fruits and well balanced aromas. The apricots, vinegar and sugars are well cooked and work well together. Pleasant spicing.” The Strawberry cheesecake proved particularly moreish as judges commented, “We were quite reluctant to pass the dish on to the next table for further judging.”

Previous Blas ar Fwyd award winners include the 2-Gold Star winning Chicken and Welsh Ale Soup, Nant Conwy Mustard, Blackcurrant cheesecake and the highly acclaimed 3-Gold Star award winning Nant Conwy Seville Marmalade and Traditional Christmas Pudding.

“We are extremely pleased with the result, having been regular entrants at the Great taste awards it is  fantastic to see a full range of our produce receiving accreditation for its taste and quality. We would like to congratulate the numerous other producers we are proud to represent at Blas ar Fwyd on also receiving Great Taste awards, it is exciting to see high quality Welsh produce receiving the recognition it deserves. We are now looking forward to showcasing our produce alongside a range of award winners at the Speciality Fine Food Fair in London this September.” Deiniol ap Dafydd, Managing Director, Blas ar Fwyd.
